Akron, Ohio

If you are new to AWG, this page should give you an idea of what to expect.

Joining up:

  • The Akron Writers’ Group isn’t a fit for every writer. There are many different types of writing groups out there and they all serve different needs.
  • Be sure to review ALL the information on this site before choosing to join up.

The first meeting:

  • You will receive an email detailing where and when we will be meeting next.
  • Since you won’t have a copy of the stories we will be reviewing, you won’t be expected to critique at your first meeting.  This allows you to focus on how our meetings function, how our members interact and how the critiquing process works.
  • If we all determine that this is a fit, you can request access to our private site where you can download story content and receive meeting information for future meetings.

General format of our meetings:

  • Meetings are casual and informal.
  • Three brave souls (selected at a previous meeting) will have already volunteered to submit their story the Sunday before the meeting.
  • It is expected that everyone in attendance (except for the brand new folks) will have read and provided written comments on each work.
  • One person at a time provides a verbal summary of their individual critique of the first author's work.
  • Others are generally encouraged not to interrupt while a critique is being given (including the author).
  • After the critiques are finished, the author is given an opportunity to ask questions.
  • The same process continues for the second and third author.
  • After reviews are completed, we determine who will volunteer to submit at future meetings and break out into individual conversations.
