Q: Can I submit a story at my first meeting? A: No. Our policy is that you must attend two meetings before you can submit your own work. This avoids the unfortunate problem of folks dropping in to get something reviewed and then disappearing.
Q: Can you review my novel? A: Yes, just not all in one meeting. We review three submissions at each meeting. Each submission is limited to no more than 18 double-spaced pages (less than 5000 words). You may submit a portion of your novel for review. Unless you are submitting the first chapters please provide a synopsis.
Q: Do you accept nonfiction, poetry, screenplays, comics? A: Yes. We are open to all forms of writing in all genres.
Q: Can I read my poem/story aloud at the meeting? A: We aren’t a performance group. Submissions are received in written form the Sunday before the Thursday meeting so that members can prepare their critique.
Q: I’m offended by foul language, violence and/or sex. Does this group keep things rated G? A: No. The human condition encompasses foul language, violence and/or sex from time to time. This is reflected in some of the stories submitted for review. If certain themes or words offend, then you may wish to join a writers’ group that better aligns to your tastes. As stated previously, we are open to all forms of writing.
Q: I’m busy on Thursday nights. Can I be a part of the group and just provide my critiques via email? A: No. We are not an online forum. There are online forums out there and some of them are pretty good. We meet in person. Occasionally a member won’t be able to make a meeting and will provide their critique via email. But this is the exception and not the rule.
Q: When does AWG meet? A: We meet on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7:00 p.m.
Q: Where does AWG meet? A: We meet at various locations in or near downtown Akron, Ohio.
Q: How long are AWG meetings? A: It varies, but the reviews are generally done by or before 9:00 p.m.
Q: What should I expect at the first meeting? A: There’s a tab for that.
Q: What are the submission guidlines? A: There’s a tab for that, too.
Q: Does it cost anything to join? A: There is no charge for membership. However, please support the locations we meet at by purchasing a drink from time to time.
Q: How do I join? A: First, review this site to make sure this group is likely to fit what you are looking for. If so, send an email to the address located on the Contact Us tab.
Q: I’ve sent an email to get more information, but nobody’s written back. What do I do? A: A reply should generally come back to you within four days. If you don’t receive an email in that timeframe, try sending another one. Double check that you are sending the message to the right address.
